SINGLE CASK MALT WHISKY IS THE PUREST FORM OF SCOTCH WHISKY AVAILABLE Consumers today are seeking rare, specialist whiskies. At Rare Drams we offer over 100 whiskies from Scotland's distilleries. There are more than 90 single malt distilleries (see map) throughout Scotland that produce whisky which is sold in over 200 countries - not bad for such a wee nation. There are 6 regions of distilleries and each adds it's own character to the taste of the whisky produced there. From sophisticated Speyside to the smoky Islay, from the fruity Lowland to the honeyed Highland and silky smooth Island whiskies. Our range of whiskies comes from nearly every distillery and at times from distilleries that are mothballed or have been completely dismantled. This way we help provide some fine whiskies from disappearing. These whiskies will be matured and bottled by Douglas Laing under their label. Douglas Laing, is one of Scotlands oldest and most respected independant bottlers and blenders. What has created this attraction for Scotch Whisky? The taste certainly has something to do with it, but what else? Five hundred years of Scots skill and experience of whisky distilling have gone into making Scotch Whisky into the world's premium spirit. The people, the terrain, the climate and pure Scotthish water all play their part in creating 'Uisge Beatha', the water of life.

OLD MALT CASK |
Old Malt Cask represent the Lowlands, Highlands & Islands of Scotland. Our OLD MALT CASK (OMC) range are whiskies taken from single casks. These Oak casks could have held Bourbon or Sherry prior to being filled with new stilled spirit, leaving their tasting influence on your palate. OMC is bottled at 50% alcohol by volume (abv), known as the "golden strength",The Malt whisky retains the individual flavours & nuances extracted from their maturation of many years in the Oak casks. Only the whisky from a single cask is used for these bottlings and therefore the flavours, smells and finishes are unique, and truly a "one off". OMC represents whiskies that no other Independent bottler can match. The size of a cask, Hogshead or Butt for example, will determine how many bottles are available of that particular malt. As mentioned some of the Distilleries no longer exist. "The Lost Distilleries" have been closed long ago however we have a few casks waiting to be released. A sample of recently released casks from some of these never to be seen from again distillers inlcude: Rosebank, Littlemill and St. Magdalene |
| OLD & RARE |
These are a special selection - limitted editions from the oldest stocks at Douglas Laing. No water is added to reduce it's strength, as the angel's share has already taken care of that. Resulting in a higher alcolhol content from 50-60% abv. No caramel colouring is added, so that you can see it's pure and natural colour. As with the rest of our bottlings this is not chill filtered. The nose, proteins and important taste factors are left intact. We prefer the full, natural resonance of the origianl Malt Whisky to come through in all it's elements. You will see on the labels that each bottle is just one of a very few. Each Old & Rare comes with a certificate of Authenticity and tasting notes and packaged in a lovely wooden box. |
| PROVENANCE |
The Provenace line is bottled under the "Douglas McGibbon" label. He was the great grandfather of the 2 owner/directors. Douglas McGibbon & Co was founded in 1949. Douglas had apparently been in charge of the old Mash House at the long closed distillery of Loch Indaal, Port Charlotte on Islay. His love of Scotch Whisky ran the gamut of the generations to a point where one of the owners served his distillery apprenticeship at the Bruichladdich Distillery also on Islay. Our Malt Master has reserved some of his particular favoirites from the younger whiskies of our reserves and offered them under the Provenance collection. Once again in the traditional style they are not chill filtered and have no colour added. The full unrestricted nose and palate, as anticipated by the Distiller, is left in the bottle. The Provenance line carries younger whiskies and are bottled at 46% abv. |
